Consider this a 'teaser' for a series I'm planning, based on one of my greatest passions...martial arts. The artistic elements of the myriad of stances and fighting positions found within the world's rich variety of martial styles are so seldom captured in still format. Such aesthetic arts as capoeira and kung-fu are now widely used in film, theatre and dance...but so many of the perhaps less flowery arts still hold a huge amount of dynamic potential, begging to be captured on film. This shot was taken from a quick study shoot on the Filipino art of Escrima, which traditionally uses combinations of knives and these rattan Kali sticks. Watching the top practitioners going to work on each other with these 'Scrim sticks is almost impossible to do without wincing!
The composition of this shot isn't as I'd like it, but framing shots well using the self-timer function is wall-punchingly difficult. Still, it was a good chance to work on my studio post-processing style, and it's encouraged me to take on the larger project I had in mind...though I might call on a friend to push the buttons next time!
EDIT - This one's worth a Full-View as there's a pretty cool 3D depth to this shot!
This is an incredible pose, so powerful. The intensity on your face goes well with this shot. I may not be knowledgeable in martial arts and the like, but this looks like a series I will be watching closely.
Very good work, in my humble opinion.

Thank you very much! I've got plans for a slightly more ambitious setting for the series, but I may well submit a few more of these studio test shots if they happen to come out ok. I'll be writing a bit about the different martial arts I present, so check my ramblings if you're interested in the background info! There's some really interesting stories behind a lot of the arts, all sorts of politics and cultural roots. I'm really looking forward to it!
I love the veins in your arms.
Maybe I'm supposed to sound professional and mention words I never officially learned the meaning of in an art-sense such as composition and framing and cropping and so on and so forth, but really, let me be honest and say and I love how the veins looks and I am a huge martial arts fan. You're right about the 3D depth.
I want to spar!
Ha! Think you can take me huh? Well you know I'm not a violent person by nature, and I don't see the point in all this confrontation but seeing as you asked so nicely
I'll SEE YOU IN THE RING PUNK! YEEEEEAHH! BRING IT ON! YOU'RE GOIN DOOOOOOWN!
[cough] But uh, no wedgies or hair-pulling ok?
Yeah, I was surprised by the veins actually...never realised they were so prominent. As for composition and all that...there was none as such...it was more a case of leaping in front of the camera with the self-timer on and trying not to take out my lighting with the sticks in the process! I realy don't know how you look so calm and composed in your self-portraits...timers bug the hell out of me! Any tips?

This is cool man! Great shot.
The rest of the series has a lot to live up to.
I wonder if I might be able to use this as a stock image?
